Some might say that the ‘idea’ for the business would be the most important thing. They may include not only an idea for a product or service but also the entire concept – the look and feel (environment) etc. The way you present everything – your website, your advertising and marketing design is important in attracting people. Your customer service attitude is what will keep them.
Certainly it would be important to know if there is a market for what you intend to promote. There is so much logic to the theory that we should not choose the product or service and try to find somebody that wants it, but to find out what the market wants and then give it to them. Think about that for a minute. It is a whole different ballgame when they come to you versus you chasing them down and trying to convince them.
Equally as important is how badly you want to have a business – your motivation. It probably should be more than ‘need money’. Ideally you would love doing whatever you have to do to get the money. You would have a passion – (besides the money). Whether that passion is related to the product or service that you are ‘on fire’ about and just can’t wait to share, or to the act of helping others by showing them a way to get what they want or need, passion can really help you get through all that you will need to do to build your business.
In many cases the motivation has to do with dissatisfaction with our lot – we are not making the kind of money we want and/or need, we are not doing something that we like to do, or there are other negative political factors associated with our workplace environment; not to mention if we are about to lose our job, love it or hate it, or have already been terminated. Any of these things can help to motivate you to start to build your own successful business.
Whatever it is, just like anything else ‘what goes around comes around’ – If you put a lot of effort and time into developing your business, you are likely to stick with it and to eventually have a successful business. If you are just half-way impressed with everything and more or less begrudgingly work at it, you may give up (fail) before giving it a fair chance.
You can control this – it is not a situation where you can’t help whether you like it or not. When you are in business for yourself you are in control of everything pretty much. At first you may not have the money or expertise to do everything exactly as you want, so you may have to make some sacrifices for a while. Psychologically having a plan for the future that looks the way you want it to will help you get through the hard times while you are building.
