Are You Cut Out to be a Home Business Entrepreneur?

If you are not sure, Wikipedia has some very good definitions of ‘Entrepreneur’ to help you decide, as follows: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entrepreneurship

(Quote) “Entrepreneurship is the process of designing, launching and running a new business, i.e. a startup company offering a product, process or service.”

It has been defined as the “…capacity and willingness to develop, organize and manage a business venture along with any of its risks in order to make a profit.”

“The entrepreneur is “a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk.” (end of quote)

There are actually some key points here about initiative and risk that are very relevant to determining if you even want to be an ‘entrepreneur’. Are you someone who is willing to take initiative? Risk? The opposite of initiative and risk is spelled ‘J-O-B’. Everything is straight up. Job description, duties performed, cash paid.

While a little initiative may be smiled upon by your employer they actually can have a mixed reaction lest you expect a raise for going above and beyond. They may purposely refuse to acknowledge your efforts for this reason. Of course that is not an absolute and some will actually reward initiative especially if it is something that you normally do.

Risk is another issue that is huge because this may be where you prefer a job since you are more or less guaranteed a paycheck after you work so many hours. With being a home business entrepreneur to start out at least you may work many hours without substantial pay. You really have to ask yourself if this bothers you.

For sure most people would want to be paid for their effort; however an entrepreneur would likely be able to see the ‘big picture’ and realize that the business needs to be developed before it reaps actual cash. Again this is not an absolute either. There are things like for example affiliate programs that may pay you right off the bat when/if you make a sale. There are no guarantees though so again this is a risk.

In this example it is actually a small risk because most affiliate programs have low monthly membership fees to participate, and should NEVER have a contract beyond month-to-month. In any case, make it or break it you will come out ahead at the very least having gained some knowledge and experience.

If you are going to actually build a real business, you will need to assume the risk and take the initiative because it is your responsibility. This may include much more than merely checking your email and will require some organization and planning.
